Course Description

Through readings, weekly seminar discussions, and community projects, students will examine the roles of art and visual artists in contemporary society – considering, particularly, how the social dynamic of creating and experiencing art can heal wounds, empower and enliven individuals, and revitalize communities. A distinctive feature of this course will be regular participation in a community-based service learning project on site at an ArtsCorpsDetroit partner organization such as Michigan Children’s Hospital, Heidelberg Project, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Mariners Inn, the Boll Family YMCA,or the Karmanos Cancer Center. Students are responsible for their own transportation; some sites are within walking distance of campus.
